Rusty Blades Hockey is dedicated to providing adults the chance to engage in ice hockey at a lower-level amateur league. We aim to create an inclusive space where everyone can partake in the thrill of the game, improve their skills, cultivate friendships, and learn to love and respect the game..
Rusty Blades Hockey is many things...a hockey community...a "travel" team....Adult Skills and Drills....and the Beginner League....but mostly a group of people with a common passion.
We go to tournaments and friendship games as a lower level (D level) team, mainly within our surrounding states (east Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Louisiana, and Alabama.
We also host teams from those areas either for friendship games or our historic Rusty Cup tournament.
Our women's team is the Rusty Babes, and they also travel to and host women's games. Sometimes they have to borrow players or combine with other teams to do so, but that makes it even more fun!!
The Rusty Blades have a loaner equipment program! Players have donated equipment, youth and adult sizes. It is free to use during games or practices--we just ask that you put it back away afterwards. Equipment available for use includes helmets, shoulder pads, elbow pads, pants (aka breezers), shin guards, gloves, skates and sticks. Please note that equipment is available on a first come, first served basis. Because equipment is voluntarily donated, there may be limited availability, particularly of uncommon sizes. We will do our best to accomodate you.
After you decide you like playing hockey (and we hope you will!), you should work on getting your own equipment. This will eliminate the possiblity that you might not be able to find fitting equipment on a particular day. The first two pieces of equipment should be a helmet and skates, as they are the most important to fit well and be of good quality.
Around 2002, We started with a group of mostly hockey moms and some other adults who were interested in joining in the fun of actually playing hockey. It started out as a late Friday night event after the last public session, where we worked on our own skating and puck control. From there it grew as more people joined. Finally we got a Sunday afternoon slot after that public session and that has been our permanent home!
Once we had enough adults to scrimmage, we obtained another ice time right after our practice time and started scrimmaging. That helped us grow further and we were able to form a league with 2 teams. That further grew into 6 teams before many of our players moved up and joined the previously known "Men's League" to form the Skatium League. Skatium League has fielded 4-6 teams each season since, with our then-"D League" fielding 2-4 teams. Beginner League split from D League around 2021 and kept the Sundays while D League took a Wednesday slot. The entirely of leagues at the Skatium now maintains 8-12 teams and a wide variety of skill levels.
Ready to hit the ice? At Rusty Blades Hockey, we welcome you to join a league that values both learning and camaraderie. Engage in weekly practices, games, and enjoy community events.
